Beginning in 6th grade, boys and girls are eligible for OARS Middle School program. Here, beginning rowers learn the basics of boat handling, the rowing stroke, fitness, and teamwork, among other things. While there are racing opportunities, they’re not as frequent at first as they are for the high school rowers.
Rowers and parents alike often see quick results in both strength and technical rowing prowess among Middle School rowers. Nonetheless, patient, expert coaching allows rowers to develop at their own speed and work into the habits that will serve them well in the years to come — not just in the boat, but in the rest of their lives as well. One thing is for sure: the sport hooks kids at this age, and hooks them good.
