Questions?

For questions about our middle school rowing program, please contact our middle school Head Coach, Jerilyn Brubaker at coachjerilyn@oarsrowing.com or our Director of Rowing, Kirsten Anderson at CoachKirsten@oarsrowing.com

Who Can Join?

6th, 7th, 8th grade students are allowed to participate in this program. 8th grade students are encouraged to  join our new competitive 8th grade  team.

There are a limited number of memberships for our middle school program. Because of this, the registration link is emailed to select groups at a time. Priority is given to rowers who have participated in learn to row programs, & have siblings on the team.

When is practice?

There are two seasons for our middle school team.

Fall Season Dates:   September 2nd - December 9th

Spring Season Dates:  January 13th - May 4th

Your athlete will be placed in a practice group based on age and experience. We would like to have the experienced rowers in the same practice group and the novice rowers or rowers without prior rowing experience in the other practice group. You do not get to pick your practice group.  If you have a conflict on the scheduled practice days, please let Coach Jerilyn know, and she will move your athlete into a practice group that is more convenient if there is available space.

Coach Jerilyn will email you your practice group a week or two after registration.

Summer storms in August and September have a tendency to affect Middle School Practice. Because of this, our program is a bit different this year.

  • Start date: September 2nd

  • During September, practice is on Saturday only

  • In October, there will be practice 3 days a week for each group

  • In November, there will be practice 3 days a week for each group (excluding Thanksgiving week)

  • In December, we will have practice on Saturdays, December 2nd and 9th

  • End date: December 9th

  • After the initial month of Saturdays in September, Practice is 3 days per week:  Monday, Wednesday, Saturday or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday

  • To best visualize the practice calendar, click on the Overall Team Calendar

Weekday practices are from 4:40-6:40 pm

Group 1 is Monday, Wednesday, Saturday -- Saturday practice will be from 8:00 am-10:00 am

Group 2 is Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday --  Saturday practice will be from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

What do I bring/wear to practice?

Wear athletic clothes, spandex, running shoes, hat, sunglasses. Bring a full refillable water bottle, and don't forget your sunscreen!

When do we race?

The middle school team typically has 1 race in the fall for experienced rowers and  1-2 races in the spring. The focus of our team is not competition or winning but rather teaching our rowers how to become better athletes and gain knowledge about the sport. If rowers can master these, success typically follows.  Tentative Race Schedule

Middle School Rowers will be required to purchase a $50 Racing Tank.
